7 Super Spices to boost your Immune System

On this sunny Sunday morning, as I was enjoying my morning cup of coffee, I started thinking about my topic for today’s blog post. As we are navigating through these unpredictable times with Coronavirus, the impact it’s having on businesses, economy and people; I couldn't help but wonder how we can turn this negative situation into a positive one and what lessons can be learned from it.

Apart from following the CDC recommendations for good hygiene and social distancing, it’s also important to start looking at our diet and consider adding foods and spices to support and boost our immune system. In this blog, I will highlight some of the most powerful “Super Spices” that can boost your immune system and are fantastic for protecting us from inflammation and diseases in general. Don’t let the word “Super” deter you from considering these spices. They are economical, easily available and add flavor to dishes we prepare on a regular basis. It’s amazing that the quantity of spice you need to consume to get the benefits is not usually more than a teaspoon or in some cases even a pinch of a spice can make a difference.

Here are the 7 super spices that you can easily incorporate into your recipes:

1. Turmeric

A pinch is enough to boost flavor and offer all the benefits. The active compound curcumin in Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties. In order to get the most of the active compound, be sure to add crushed black pepper to the dish; making it more bio available.

2. Ginger

Ginger contains gingerol, an active compound proven to have medicinal properties. A teaspoon of ginger powder adds a lot of flavor to soups, salad dressings, chili and many more dishes. In addition to that, I always enjoy a hot cup of ginger tea!

3. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is known for its DNA protection properties and is so simple to add to your diet. It’s as simple as adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to a oatmeal bowl or any of your favorite pudding. I enjoy my morning cup of coffee with a pinch of cinnamon.

4. Rosemary

Rosemary is packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. In small quantities, it’s proven to improve brain function. Add it to roasted potatoes or to pasta sauce!

5. Amla

Also known as “Indian Gooseberry”, it’s an Ayurvedic wonder! Several medical journals have published research on this wonder fruit, it’s powerful antioxidant levels and its ability to fight and prevent cancer. All you need is less than a teaspoon of this to get all the benefits.

6. Dried peppermint

It’s easy to use and I love how it enhances the aroma and flavor of most dishes, especially Indian food! Next time you make a curry or a Mediterranean salad, top it off with some dried mint and enjoy!

7. Garlic

Last but not the least, don't forget to add garlic either fresh or powdered. It not only makes food tasty, but offers some awesome heart health benefits too!
